Contains saponin (saporubin), saponarin, gum, resin, acids, and mucilage.
Cholagogue, diuretic, expectorant, purgative. A decoction of the rootstock is used most Commonly as an expectorant for congestion. It has also been used for gout and externally as a wash or fomentation for dermatitis, itching skin, furuncles, and tumors. Soapwort has mild purgative action.
